bunnymcfoo: (we're all too small to talk to god)
So last year, on December 4th, I made a post. I said that I was too poor to give people gifts this year, and instead of giving me anything, I wanted my friends to donate money so I could go shopping for underwear for the local teen homeless shelter.

The project took on a life of its own, and in three weeks the internet raised over $3,000.

I'd like to do that again this year. So this is where I tell you that Spokane is cold. Thursday, when I was driving to work, it was 19 degrees out. Our weekly high has been in the 30s. These kids don't have much in the way of clothing, and they especially don't have much in the way of warm, practical gear. Most of what they own is second, third, or fourth hand.

I went by the shelter tonight, and grabbed their Holiday wishlist. It reads:

  • Underwear & socks

  • Jeans, hooded sweatshirts, flannel shirts & tops (esp XL-XXL)

  • Gloves & stocking caps

  • Games & activities (basketballs, board games, footballs, hacky sacks, hand held video games, playing cards, tech decks, etc)

  • Toiletries (esp. deodorant & toothbruhes) & make-up

  • Arts & crafts supplies

  • Boots & winter shoes

  • Gift certificates (books, clothes, food, movies, music, etc)

  • Twin bedding & bath towels

  • Bicycle helmets, lights & locks

Socks, hoodies, and gloves have been circled. I'm told that (again) underwear are in great demand.

I've gone and priced those items, and hoodies seem to be running around $18. Socks and gloves and underwear can be bought in multi-packs, and run between $2 and $7 dollars a pack.

I'd like to raise $500 to buy hoodies, socks, underwear, and gloves for these kids.

I know that money is super tight for all of us this time of year, and I know that nobody has a lot to give. But here's the thing - if a hundred people each give $5, that's $500. I know that's possible, because over 300 people donated last year. If you've even got a dollar in your paypal account, that would be wonderful too, and if you don't have that - please please repost this. Spread the word, this won't be possible without it! Livejournal, blogs, twitter, facebook, whatever. The more people who see this, the more likely it is that we'll be able to do this.

So yes. that's my Christmas wish again this year. Help me help out a bunch of kids who don't have anything, and could really use something to make their lives a little bit better.

My paypal is jessamayone@hotmail.com , and if you have any questions, I can be reached at bunnymcfoo at gmail dot com, or through a comment on this entry. Please be sure to mark donations as being a gift, or paypal will take a small chunk out of the donation D: I would prefer it if you did not use the button, since you can't mark a gift at that point.

I'm really really crossing my fingers that this works out well. If anyone wants more information about the shelter, I can provide that - just ask! All of your contributions are tax-deductible, and I would be more than happy to mail receipts to you.

EDIT: The Holiday party for the shelter is the 15th, so if it's possible to get this done before then, that would be wonderful. I will, however, be accepting donations until the 24th - they're always accepting things, and I could hit the after Christmas sales with whatever was left after the 15th. <3 <3 <3

CHILD OF EDIT: It has been pointed out to me that non-US paypal is slightly different, and may not give you the option of marking something as a gift - if that's the case for you, please don't worry about it. The amount taken from your donation is negligible, and your gift will be gratefully received.

THE EDIT STRIKES BACK: This post has been up for about 20 hours at this point, and just over $800 has been raised. I'm so utterly delighted in all of you, and wish that I could hug the internet. At this point, we're past simply hoodies and socks and into hoodies, socks, undies, jeans, and toothbrushes. Thank you, you are all wonderful.

So some of you might have noticed that I've been bitten by the bug of a new fandom. :D Hello Generation Kill, you are very shiny. Here, 36 icons that I made from the first five episodes, 18 black and white and 18 color. There's some very attractive men on this show, trufax.

Want, take, enjoy. Just, you know, please to be giving me credit and comment here. :)

I really do think this should go without saying, but I'm going to say it anyway, just in case.

When I was 18, I terminated a pregnancy. I had the abortion on the last day of my first trimester, and barely managed to skate under that wire.

If I had found out when I was four months or five months along, I don't know what I would have done, but I'm fairly sure that my actions would have remained the same. I don't think that any woman, no matter who she is, needs to justify having an abortion. I don't care if she's one month or eight months into the pregnancy, I support her right to terminate it.

[livejournal.com profile] esorlehcar has a round up of excellent links about the murder of Dr. George Tiller, who was shot to death while attending church on Sunday. He was one of the few remaining doctors in this country who would perform late term abortions, and I can't tell you how fucking angry and broken hearted I am over this murder.

If you are anti-choice, I respect your right to have opinions that are different from mine. That said, if you, in any way at all, support this kind of atrocity, please do me the courtesy of taking me off your friendslist.

I really had hoped that all of this went without saying, but y'all, anything that shows up on a filter on my livejournal was intended to be seen by that filter and ONLY that filter. I find it really disappointing that things I had posted were, from what I gather, shown to those who were not intended to see them.

As such, I've made some alterations to my flist that made me damn sad, but that I felt had to be made. Hopefully there will eventually be a time when I can alter that decision, but it's not happening any time soon.

Hey Y'all,

So there's this meme going around, where people post their wishlists for the December Holidays. You know the one? Where people say that they want fic, or a pony, or whatever.

I'm too poor to give anyone anything this year, so I'm not really gonna play that game. Instead, here's my twist:

One of my housemates works with/at a local homeless shelter for teens. From what she's said, they run around 15-20 kids at any time, and several of them live there on a fairly permanent basis.

Here's the thing. These kids pretty much don't have anything new, and the vast majority of their clothing and belongings are donated. Sounds pretty ok, right? Yeah, if you're interested in wearing clothing that's several years out of date, or about three decades too old for you - nobody really wants to dress like they're sixty when they're sixteen. Not to mention, can you imagine wearing second hand bras and panties?

You might be aware that I've got a seasonal job at Lane Bryant. This is awesome, for a number of reasons, but the key one here is that I've asked for and been given permission to use my 40% employee discount for the plus-sized girls who live at this shelter. I'm planning on hitting up Victoria's Secret or even Macy's in our mall this week and seeing if they'll match this discount as I'd really really like to get all the girls who live at the shelter some underwear that's never been used, is in their size, and is pretty.

Instead of giving me anything this holiday, I'd love it if you could donate some money towards this cause. I'm hoping to raise enough money to be able to get each girl two pairs of panties and a bra. Five pairs of panties run $25 at LB, and each bra works out to around $20. I figure if I can get around $200, I can swing this.

Of course, if I can get more than $200, I could do something for the guys. Spokane is freezing y'all, and they're always in need of things like socks and hoodies. I'm betting that I could talk a couple of stores into letting me buy things at their employee discount rate, and it would be awfully cool if the guys weren't left out of this.

So yeah, that's my Christmas wish this year. Help me help out a bunch of kids who don't have anything, and could really use something to make their lives a little bit better.

My paypal is jessamayone@hotmail.com (or click the shiny link!), and if you have any questions, I can be reached at bunnymcfoo at gmail dot com, or through a comment on this entry.

PLEASE, feel free to link this high and low, (especially if you've got a big friendslist :D) I'm really really crossing my fingers that this works out well. If anyone wants more information about the shelter, or wants a receipt for their donation, I can provide those - just ask!

ETA: I'm heading back down to the family's for Christmas on the 23rd, and I'd love to have something to actually get to the kids FOR Christmas, so I'm thinking that the 20th or the 21st is the deadline for this. ♥
